Coolant Filters, Why should I change them?

Of all the filters the coolant filter sets alone and the lone neglected filter.  All the others get changed during every service, but because the extended service coolant filter has a life of 150,000miles (4,000 hours) it frequently is missed.  But what if you don't have an extended life water filter?  A standard coolant filter is only good for 25,000 miles (500 hours).
I know some of you out there may think, Why do I even need to change my water filter? It's closed system right?

A technical study done by Fleetguard shows the following:

"Fleetguard evaluated a large population of used filters.  In this population, over 40% contained moderate contamination levels.  Over 10% of the used filters contained heavy contamination.  This study showed that even though it is a closed system, there are contaminants to be removed from the coolant.

Published data, from multiple sources summarized in an SAE report, indicated that there is a direct benefit between filtering contaminate from collant and reducing wear, corrosion, pitting and plugging.  This data also indicates correlation between filtration and reduction in scale formation helping the engine maintain effective heat transfer for optimum performance.

As end-users extend coolant life by reducing coolant leaks and general disposal, coolant filtration becomes more important.  Without regular addition of clean coolant, the amount of contamination could increase.

One of the most significant studies compared over 11,000 trucks, half using coolant filters and the other half not.  The trucks with coolant filters had 1/3 the failures of leaking water pump seals as experience with the trucks without filters.  This indicated that coolant filter can significantly affect engine failure rates."

What does tell me?  We need to pay close attention to our coolant filters and change them as per our manufacturers guidelines.
